"Songs from the Wood: The Woody Brothers bring their tunes back to the roots", June 11, 1996, Folio Weekly, Jacksonville, FL

By Arvid Smith

The Woody Brothers new self-titled CD has been moving so well that the Beaches-based quintet is just about out of inventory. That's no small wonder as the band is the kind that can gig anywhere and plays the type of music that appeals to any set of ears.

The Woody Brothers' name is derived from their belief in "wooden music", though their disc rocks a bit more than one might think. The band even chooses to put down the lead guitar work on acoustic guitars, with nary an electric to be found. This is country rock firmly in the Poco/Firefall/Pure Prairie League orbit with a sprinkling of Jimmy Buffett. The songs exhibit the best of the genre's finesse albeit with none of the honky tonk raunch.

The CD's twelve cuts echo the years when Gram Parsons and the Fallen Angels and the early Eagles were vital forces. "Woody Brothers" is beautifully recorded with occasional guest soloing from Brian Homan on pedal steel and Gary Smalley on the smaller Hawaiian variety. Gunga Din's fiddle ace T.R. Zielinski also puts in appearances on two cuts.

The disc's standout cuts are "Uncommon Sense" and "Somewhere in Florida" with catchy melodic structures and to-the-point lead work. Listen also for "Corduroy", a slightly extended jazz boogie, not all together out of place with the record's "swingier" sounds. "The Motherlode" is another gem as well, a plaintive ballad that could have come straight from the pen of Jonathan Edwards.

The Woody Brothers can usually be found at the Beaches or in Saint Augustine on any given weekend. Catch them this Friday June 14 and 15 at Fishheads on 3rd Street in Jax Beach, and during the day Saturday and Sunday June 15 and 16 at The World Famous Oasis in Saint Augustine Beach.
